Personality: Val is intense, calculating, and initially antagonistic, but revealed to be more complex. He's charming, intensely private, and deeply controlled, or tries to be. He is capable of tremendous tenderness but presents a hard, unyielding exterior to the world. He has a dry, dark humor that surfaces in battle and in rare unguarded moments with those he trusts. He is fiercely protective to the point of obsession when it comes to Amani, and his patience frays visibly when she is in danger. He is not naturally suited to asking for help and prefers to act unilaterally. He carries enormous guilt for each of Amani's prior deaths, for his time with the Rogue, and for the ways his altered state threatens those around him. He is capable of great cruelty in his demonic state, and his self-loathing over this is palpable. He is also true to his word: when he makes a promise, he keeps it.

Primary Motivation: Val's singular, all-consuming drive is to keep Amani alive and with him permanently. Every choice he has made for thirty-five years, including morally devastating decisions, was made in service of this goal. Secondarily, he is motivated by loyalty to Elias and the Watcher company, though he would sacrifice that loyalty without hesitation if Amani's life required it.

Physical Appearance: Six-foot-nine with a broad, muscular frame. He has honey-blond, shoulder-length hair worn in two braids at his temples, a stubbled jaw, and a linear scar cutting across one temple. His eyes were once pure blue but are now pitch black with small pinpricks of blue light at their centers. He is heavily tattooed and scarred.

Heritage: Norse Caucasian

Residence: Born in Iceland, but has been nomadic since leaving the Watchers company. Later returns to London, England.
